Jatan Nagar, a palace with a mysterious and fascinating atmosphere, was built in the early 20th century at the behest of the brother of the king of Dhenkanal.
Stories and legends
Jatan Nagar was built in the early 20th century by Pattayet Nrusingha Pratap Singhdeo, the younger brother of the then-king of Dhenkanal, Raja Sri Shankar Pratap Singh Deo Mahindra Bahadur. The palace, with 100 rooms, is named after Queen Jatna Devi.
It is said that during the construction of the building, hundreds of labourers were subjected to torture and forced labour. Elephants were used to transport the heaviest loads. Legend has it that the voices of the workers who lost their lives during its construction still resound in the rooms of the palace.
Today
Today, Jatan Negar has become a local hangout, where teenagers spend hours taking pictures and making reels while admiring the breathtaking view.
Currently, the building is being maintained and various lights have been installed around the perimeter of the building. Once the sun goes down, the lights are turned on by the guards on duty.
